The Bachelor of Arts in Biblical Counseling is designed for students who feel called to speak into life’s hardest moments with the power of God’s Word and the heart of a disciple-maker.

At Montana Bible College, we believe biblical counseling is more than a profession—it’s a ministry of Christ-centered care. That’s why this stand-alone degree equips you with more than just techniques. You’ll dive deep into Scripture, theology, and human nature, learning how to help people wrestle with guilt, shame, anxiety, addiction, broken relationships, and more—through the lens of the gospel.

Whether you're leading a discipleship group, serving in church ministry, preparing for seminary, or counseling in your local community, this degree offers a path that is biblically grounded, spiritually rich, and practically tested.

Objectives

Upon completing the program, you should be able to...

Disciple  people in a church or other ministry who struggle with emotional and behavioral issues resulting from their own brokenness and fallenness as well as that of others and the world around them.

Work cooperatively with clergy, health care professionals, and various community leaders.

Demonstrate sympathy and empathy as one who is also on the path of sanctification.

Apply to receive a Formation Certificate and an Essentials of Biblical Counseling Certificate from the  Christian Counseling & Education Foundation (CCEF).

Degree Specific Courses and Descriptions

Biblical Counseling courses (BC) prepare students for growth in their own sanctification, as well as guiding others in the process of biblical change.

BC 301 MODELS OF SANCTIFICATION (3)

Students examine models of sanctification held by various denominations and Christian groups. Students also evaluate and develop their own model for the purpose of promoting personal growth and holiness. Specific attention is given to how moral change occurs. This course can also count as a theology class. Offered on demand.

BC 303 COUNSELING OBSERVATION (3)

Students observe and discuss video-taped counseling sessions. The course is designed to help the student learn practical skills in counseling by observation, evaluation, critique, and discussion. Offered on demand.

BC 304 BIBLICAL PEACEMAKING (3)

Students learn a biblical paradigm of relational peace, examining concepts such as forgiveness, confrontation, repentance, reconciliation, restoration, and restitution. Students develop personal conflict resolution skills as well as the ability to coach others through conflict and mediate disputes. Spring.

BC 310 DYNAMICS OF BIBLICAL CHANGE (3)

This course is a foundational counseling course that introduces the key framework and themes related to the wisdom and practice of biblical counseling. The way that you counsel other people is determined by how you understand God, yourself, other people, life’s pressures, and change. This course addresses the depth, breadth, and balance of your understanding. Students who complete this course along with BC 320 may be eligible to apply for the CCEF Formation Certificate. Hybrid. Fall and Summer.

BC 320 HELPING RELATIONSHIPS (3)

This course seeks to develop your ministry skills, whether in everyday friendships or more formal, counseling relationships. You'll grow in your ability to listen well, know people, interpret another person’s story from a biblical perspective, carefully and wisely apply Scripture, and offer biblically-based truth that will motivate others in their growth in Christ. Students who complete this course along with BC 310 may be eligible to apply for the CCEF Formation Certificate. Hybrid. Spring and Summer.

BC 400 BIBLICAL COUNSELING INTERNSHIP (4)

Students engage in practical application of biblical counseling and the various methodological aspects of the counseling process. The course will include student participation in a counseling situation as a counselor when an actual counseling case can be provided. All actual counseling situations will be supervised and evaluated as a part of the internship course. Internship requirements and applications may be obtained through the Registrar’s Office. Fall and spring, offered on demand. Prerequisite: junior or senior standing. Internships must be passed with a minimum grade of “C”. Lower grades require repeating the internship.

BC 410 APPLIED THEOLOGY OF THE PERSON (3)

This is a practical theology course examining Scripture’s unfolding answer to personal identity and corporate humanity. This course will give you a theological framework for understanding yourself and those around you so that you may know people better and help more effectively. Students who complete this course along with BC 420, BC 430, and BC 440 may apply for the CCEF Essentials of Biblical Counseling Certificate. Hybrid. Fall and Spring. Prerequisites: BC 310 and BC 320

BC 420 SCRIPTURE FOR LIFE & MINISTRY (3)

Scripture is authoritative and sufficient for counseling, but how do you connect God’s Word effectively to the lives and struggles of people around you? How do you use the Bible’s redemptive story in counseling so that counselees grow in their knowledge of and love for the sovereign Lord? This course will help you understand both people and the Bible more thoroughly and is designed to strengthen your ability to rivet Scriptural truth to real-life ministry situations. Students who complete this course along with BC 410, BC 430, and BC 440 may apply for the CCEF Essentials of Biblical Counseling Certificate. Hybrid. Spring and Summer. Prerequisites: BC 310 and BC 320

BC 430 EVERYDAY PROBLEMS IN COUNSELING (3)

This course considers more than ten everyday problems that people face in a fallen world, such as suffering, shame, conflict, and anger. With each problem, we will consider how the Bible conceptualizes the experience and how it leads us to help others to persevere through problems with the goal that their faith expresses itself through love (Gal 5:6). Students who complete this course along with BC 410, BC 420, and BC 440 may apply for the CCEF Essentials of Biblical Counseling Certificate. Hybrid. Fall and Spring. Prerequisites: BC 310 and BC 320

BC 440 COUNSELING IN THE LOCAL CHURCH (3)

Pastors, elders, and lay leaders will benefit from this course's biblical foundation and historical context for pastoral care and counseling. We'll prioritize practical wisdom as we survey issues of pastoral care such as hospital visitation, crisis response, and church discipline. Students who complete this course along with BC 410, BC 420, and BC 430 may apply for the CCEF Essentials of Biblical Counseling Certificate. Hybrid. Spring and Summer. Prerequisites: BC 310 and BC 320

BC 499 BIBLICAL COUNSELING SPECIAL TOPICS (3)

This course is reserved for opportunities for MBC to offer courses on specialized topics. Offered on demand.
